Elite League Title History and Upcoming Crucial Weekend

Over the past seven completed Elite League seasons, either the Cardiff Devils or Belfast Giants have secured the league title on six occasions.

In team sports, there are often pivotal weekends that determine the outcome of a league campaign. With six weeks remaining in the Elite League season, a significant amount of hockey remains to be played. However, many Cardiff Devils supporters may view the upcoming two games as critical to their title aspirations.

On Friday, the Devils will host the league leaders, Belfast Giants, at the Vindico Arena, followed by a Sunday visit to face the fourth-placed Nottingham Panthers.

Although Cardiff still have 15 Elite League games left, the importance of this weekend’s fixtures is difficult to overlook for the team currently in second place.

Devils head coach Paul Thompson acknowledged the significance of these matches.

"I don't think it'll decide the season because we all must play each other so many times but it's pretty crucial we come out the right way," Thompson told Wales.
"Belfast have been on an unbelievable run of just picking up points when they shouldn't.
"They're picking up points in overtime, picking up points late in the game, when they're behind they're finding a way to keep the point board ticking and that's why they've been the team with all the wins.
"It's their experience of having players that have won multiple championships and the rest of the pack are just chasing it."

Recent Form and League Standings

Since the start of the year, Belfast have exhibited the best form in the league, recording 12 wins and four losses.

Cardiff’s record in 2026 stands at nine wins and five defeats, comparable to other title contenders. The Sheffield Steelers have achieved 10 wins and five losses, while the Nottingham Panthers have secured eight wins and six defeats.

This weekend presents a significant opportunity for the Devils to strengthen their title challenge.

Regarding their upcoming match against Belfast, Cardiff have reasons for optimism. The Giants’ away record in the league has been less impressive, with eight defeats in 20 away games.

The Devils have also defeated the Giants in both previous home encounters this season.

Thompson commented on the preparations.

"We've had a good look at them," he said.
"They've had a good look at us too, and we've spent the whole week focusing on them and Nottingham and we're excited by the challenge.
"The situation is we're four points off Belfast; we must close that gap and it makes Friday a four-point game."

Panthers Ready to Challenge

On Sunday, Cardiff will travel to Nottingham to face the Panthers, who in January became the first British club to win the Continental Cup twice.

The Panthers also recently secured a 3-0 victory over Sheffield in the first leg of the Challenge Cup semi-final.

Despite this, Cardiff have reasons to be confident. Nottingham have lost 10 home games across league and cup competitions this season.

Two of those home defeats were inflicted by the Devils this season, marking Cardiff’s first wins at the Nottingham Motorpoint Arena in two years.

Paul Thompson, who was appointed Cardiff Devils head coach in May 2025, spoke about the upcoming challenge.

"They're a highly talented team offensively there's no doubt about that and we must be mindful of that, but I think over the last month we've been playing pretty well.
"In Guildford (last weekend) we gave up eight shots when we were five-on-five so defensively, we're strong.
"We've just got to make sure that we keep doing the right things to get ourselves in positions to score goals and take our opportunities when they come but I love the way we're playing right now.
"We're really excited about the opportunity this weekend. Two massive games but we're a good team as well so I'm confident that we will come out of this the right way."

Thompson, who has won six league titles with Coventry Blaze and Sheffield Steelers and led Odense Bulldogs to their first Danish championship in 2025, is familiar with the pressures of this stage of the season.

"Come March time you just want to still be at the party," Thompson added.
"It's squeaky bum time but now we've all got to be - and we are - totally united in what we're trying to achieve.
"If it comes off (winning the Elite League) it'll be phenomenal for the city, for the club, for the players, for the fans and we'll be leaving everything we have on the ice."
