Faith and Persistence Define Cacace's Journey to Title Fight
Anthony Cacace has faced numerous challenges throughout his boxing career but stands on the verge of becoming a two-time super-featherweight world champion with his upcoming bout against WBA titleholder James 'Jazza' Dickens in Dublin's 3 Arena this Saturday.
Despite his undeniable talent, Cacace often found himself overlooked during his professional journey. His progress was frequently hindered by injuries, opponent withdrawals, and fight cancellations, limiting his opportunities in the ring.
Nevertheless, Cacace remained dedicated, balancing rigorous training sessions with delivering pizzas at night, all while maintaining hope and belief that his moment would arrive.
That moment came in May 2024 when he faced IBF champion Joe Cordina on the undercard of the Oleksandr Usyk versus Tyson Fury event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Returning to his former amateur team led by Michael Hawkins, Cacace, who has a Belfast mother and Italian father, seized the opportunity and was celebrated upon his return home. A mural was painted near his parents' residence in Andersonstown, west Belfast, to honor his achievement.
Since then, Cacace has continued his ascent, defeating Josh Warrington at Wembley Stadium later in 2024. After vacating the IBF title, he secured a victory over Leigh Wood in Nottingham in May 2025, improving his professional record to 24 wins and one loss.
"Fighting for my second world title, things can't get better than that," Cacace told NI while preparing for training at Holy Trinity Boxing Club. "I've had my fair share of letdowns and pull-outs at the last minute, but I can't complain because it's been all in God's plan. I really do genuinely believe everything that's happened has happened for a reason to set me up for times like these.
"To be up here with the boys [coaching team]: Ruairi [Dalton], Michael [Hawkins Jr], Barry [O'Neill], Micky [Hawkins] Sr - it's been set for me, I genuinely believe.
"It's like a dream come true, and I'm just really enjoying where I'm at at the moment."

Understanding the Challenge Ahead Against Dickens
While Cacace's path to major fights has been indirect, he understands the mindset his opponent will bring to their upcoming contest. James Dickens of Liverpool has faced setbacks in previous world-title attempts at super-bantamweight and featherweight. However, he achieved a career-defining victory last July by stopping 2020 Olympic gold medallist Albert Batyrgaziev to claim the interim WBA title, which was upgraded to full champion status in December.
"Jazza has been waiting the guts of 15 years, longer to become a world champion, so I know it's not going to be easy," Cacace said. "It's a hard sport and we all give a lot of hard work, sacrifice and I think it's going to be a real gruelling fight.
"Jazza has just won the world title and he's trying to set his family up. I know what I'd be willing to do in his situation, so I can only say he is willing to do the same."
Faith Beyond Boxing Guides Cacace
Cacace's faith extends beyond the boxing ring. Prior to each fight, he visits St Jude's Shrine in Carlingford, County Louth, where he offers prayers and expresses gratitude for the positive changes in his life.
"I go down, I say my prayers, and I leave a wee message. In the same way as other boxers will have different types of rituals, that's mine."
If his prayers are answered this weekend, Cacace will return home with a second world title belt. Just a few years ago, such an achievement seemed unlikely, but his perseverance has yielded significant rewards.
Providing for his family has always been his primary motivation, but the chance to enhance his legacy is equally important.
"This is to go down as one of the greatest Irish fighters ever, so no pressure," he said with a smile. "It's mad because two years ago, no one knew me. All of a sudden, I have a chance to fight for two world titles in two years.
"I never expected to be in this position. Everything I've wanted out of this sport, I have now. This is just an extra bonus, and a massive bonus at that. Hopefully, I can take this opportunity and make everyone proud."
