Seized Tanker Begins Transit from Scotland to United States

A Russian-flagged oil tanker, the Marinera, which was seized in the North Atlantic, has commenced its journey to the United States after being berthed in Scottish waters, according to BBC Scotland News.

American authorities took control of the Marinera on 7 January, south of Iceland, before escorting it to the Moray coast in Scotland.

It has remained there since but has now been escorted into the North Sea.

It is understood that the Marinera, previously named Bella 1, is being towed from Scotland to the English Channel and will subsequently cross the Atlantic Ocean.

Sanctions Allegations and UK Support

The United States accused the Marinera of violating sanctions by transporting oil for Venezuela, Russia, and Iran.

The UK government supported the operation to seize the tanker, describing it as a lawful action against a vessel involved in sanctions breaches.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) provided operational support, and US aircraft utilized UK airfields, including some located in Scotland.

Russian Government Response and Legal Proceedings

The Russian government condemned the seizure, demanding that the US properly treat the Russian nationals aboard and facilitate their prompt return to Russia.

US administration sources later indicated that the tanker would undergo a judicial forfeiture process upon arrival in the United States.

Military and Operational Details

It is reported that US military aircraft landed at small civilian airports in Wick, Caithness, and Benbecula in the Western Isles during the operation on 7 January.

The MoD confirmed that the Royal Navy tanker RFA Tideforce and RAF surveillance aircraft supported American personnel and stated that "deterring, disrupting and degrading" Russia's "shadow fleet" was a priority.

Location of the Marinera in Scottish Waters

The Marinera has been anchored in the firth off Burghead, a village on the Moray coast.

The Moray Firth is a sheltered sea area situated between the east Highland coast and the coasts of Moray and Aberdeenshire.

The tanker is a large ship with rusty marks on its hull. The upper part of its hull is painted blue and it has a white bridge and a single blue funnel. In the foreground is a white US Coast Guard vessel. There are snow-covered hills in the background.
