Infant Found Alone in Times Square

A six-month-old girl was discovered alone in a stroller at a busy intersection in Manhattan's iconic Times Square area.

Police are actively searching for the father of the baby, who was left unattended in a stroller on Tuesday night.

The New York Police Department reported receiving an emergency call around 11 p.m. regarding the infant found at West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue. Authorities confirmed the six-month-old girl was unharmed, conscious, and alert inside the stroller. She was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Investigation Underway

Detectives are pursuing leads to locate the father, who is believed to frequent the Times Square vicinity. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and canvassing local residents with a photograph of the child to trace his movements.

Legal Context for Infant Abandonment

Under New York state law, a parent unable or unwilling to care for an infant younger than 30 days old may legally relinquish the child if proper precautions are taken to ensure the infant's safety.

The law, enacted in 2000, stipulates that a parent is not criminally liable if the baby is left with an appropriate individual or in a safe location such as a police precinct, hospital, or firehouse. For children older than 30 days, parents are expected to contact the administration for children’s services field office.

Related Incidents Highlighting Child Welfare Concerns

This recent incident occurs amid heightened concerns following a tragic event earlier this month involving a seven-month-old baby girl shot during a gang-related shooting in Brooklyn.

Kaori Patterson-Moore was fatally shot on April 1 when two men on a motorcycle, traveling against traffic in the Williamsburg neighborhood, opened fire. The man riding as a passenger discharged a firearm during the incident.

Amuri Greene, 21, has been charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder in connection with the shooting. He has pleaded not guilty.

New York’s mayor described the killing as:

“an unthinkable loss” and said: “We cannot accept this violence as normal.”

Mass Shooting in Louisiana

Over the weekend, a mass shooting in Louisiana resulted in the deaths of eight children aged three to eleven. The perpetrator, Shamar Elkins, father to seven of the victims, carried out an early-morning attack with a pistol described by authorities as an “execution style” shooting.

Elkins, 31, a former Louisiana National Guard member, was shot dead by police after fleeing the scene. Two mothers of the seven children were also seriously injured. This incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in the United States so far this year.
