US Defence Secretary Requests Army Chief's Immediate Retirement
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has requested that Army Chief of Staff Randy George step down from his position, according to CBS News, the BBC's US partner.
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced on social media that George "will be retiring from his position as the 41st chief of staff of the army effective immediately".
The US Army chief typically serves a four-year term. George, a career military officer and West Point graduate, was nominated for the role in 2023 by former President Joe Biden.
Context and Background
This recent leadership change follows former President Donald Trump's national address, in which he stated that the US-Israel conflict with Iran was expected to conclude "very shortly".
George's military career includes service as an infantry officer during the first Gulf War and deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. The reasons behind the request for his departure have not been disclosed.
"We are grateful for his service, but it was time for a leadership change in the army," an unnamed senior defence official told CBS.
Parnell added:
"The Department of War is grateful for General George's decades of service to our nation. We wish him well in his retirement."
Succession and Additional Changes
Army Vice-Chief of Staff General Christopher LaNeve will assume the role of acting Army Chief of Staff, according to US media reports.
Two other senior army officials, General David Hodne and Major General William Green, have also been removed from their positions, CBS reported citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation.
Hodne had been leading the Army's Transformation and Training Command, while Green served as chief of the Army's Chaplain Corps.
Parnell described LaNeve as:
"a battle-tested leader with decades of operational experience and is completely trusted by Secretary Hegseth to carry out the vision of this administration without fault."
Recent Activities and Broader Pentagon Changes
The US Military Academy at West Point shared photos on Wednesday showing George meeting with troops, where he "shared experience-driven guidance with cadets preparing to lead".
Since assuming his role at the Pentagon, Hegseth has dismissed more than a dozen senior military officers, including the Chief of Naval Operations and the Air Force's Vice-Chief of Staff.
