Conviction of Pakistani Man in Plot Against US Politicians

A Pakistani man has been convicted for planning to assassinate Donald Trump and other prominent US politicians in 2024, allegedly under the direction of Iranian authorities.

Asif Merchant was accused of attempting to recruit individuals in the United States to carry out a plan targeting Trump and others in retaliation for the killing of Iranian military commander Qassem Suleimani during Trump’s first presidential term.

Targets and Charges

Federal prosecutors stated that the 2024 plot also included targets such as then-President Joe Biden and Nikki Haley, the former US ambassador to the United Nations who ran against Trump for the Republican presidential nomination that year.

Merchant was convicted of "murder for hire and attempting to commit an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries," according to a statement from the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

Trial and Admission

The trial, held in New York City, began last week, shortly before Trump ordered a military assault on Iran, conducted alongside Israel, which has escalated into the region’s largest conflict in recent years.

Merchant admitted to participating in the plot orchestrated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) but claimed he did so to protect his family residing in Tehran.

He stated that he was never explicitly ordered to kill a specific individual but that his Iranian handler mentioned three potential targets during conversations in Tehran.

Intervention and Arrest

Law enforcement agencies prevented the plot from advancing before any attack could take place. In April 2024, an individual Merchant contacted to assist with the plan reported his activities and became a confidential informant, as detailed by the DOJ.

Merchant was subsequently arrested and pleaded not guilty that same year.

Role of the IRGC and Regional Conflict

The IRGC holds significant military, economic, and intelligence influence within Iran. Tehran has denied allegations that it targeted Trump or other US officials.

Since Saturday, US and Israeli operations have resulted in the deaths of at least 1,332 Iranian civilians and injured thousands, according to Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations. Numerous high-ranking Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have been killed.

The US military reported that six service members were killed in a strike on a facility in Kuwait, while at least ten Israeli civilians have been reported dead.
