Woman Fatally Shot After Abducting Child at Walmart

A knife-wielding woman was fatally shot by police in the parking lot of a Walmart in Nebraska after she abducted a child at random, authorities reported.

Noemi Guzman took a three-year-old boy at knifepoint from the Omaha supermarket on Tuesday, according to police. Body-worn camera footage from officers showed Guzman holding the knife near the child.

Police stated that Guzman refused to drop the weapon and that she inflicted a cut on the boy's cheek before two officers discharged their firearms.

The 31-year-old woman, who had a history of mental illness, was declared dead at the scene. The child was transported to a hospital and treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Sequence of Events and Investigation

Investigators revealed that Walmart surveillance footage captured the suspect shoplifting the knife prior to the incident.

She then approached the child and the child's caretaker, brandished the knife, and compelled the adult to walk ahead while the child remained seated in the shopping cart, police said.

The suspect led them through the store and into the parking lot before law enforcement officers arrived on the scene, according to police statements.

Family Reactions

The boy's mother, Sara Hillman, shared her feelings with the BBC's US partner CBS, expressing uncertainty about the outcome:

"What if it could have gone a different way?"

The boy's father, Casey Hillman, advised other parents to be vigilant:

"Hold your children tight because you never know how it can turn out. Pay attention to what's going on around you."

They noted that their son, who usually enjoys outdoor activities, was frightened to go outside the following day.

Suspect's Background

Police records indicate that a woman named Noemi Guzman was arrested earlier in 2024 for attempting to set a fire inside a residence and injuring her father with a knife.

Subsequently, she allegedly broke into a Catholic church armed with a knife and caused property damage while a priest secured himself in a room.

The suspect was reportedly found not responsible by reason of insanity. A judge determined that she was suffering from schizophrenia and ordered that she remain under court supervision, according to local media reports.
