Congressman Tom Kean Jr Secures Republican Nomination Amid Absence
Republican Congressman Tom Kean Jr, who has not been seen in Washington or his New Jersey district for several months, secured his party's nomination for re-election on Tuesday following a recent endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
Trump publicly expressed his support on social media, stating:
"Tom Kean has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election. HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!"
Kean ran unopposed in the Republican primary and therefore did not engage in active campaigning. However, US media outlets have reported that he has been absent from Congress, missing over 100 votes.
In the upcoming November midterm elections, Kean will compete against Democrat Rebecca Bennett, a former US Navy helicopter pilot who won her party's primary on the same day.
Details of Kean's Absence and Health Status
Kean was last publicly seen on 5 March. In April, his staff disclosed that he was addressing a medical issue. Despite this, his ongoing absence has attracted national attention and curiosity within the United States.
In his endorsement posted on Truth Social on Monday, Trump described Kean as a:
"Tremendous Advocate of our America First Agenda" and "is working tirelessly".
Following his last recorded vote in Congress in March, colleagues, Republican officials, and news organizations expressed concern about his whereabouts. Attempts to contact him via text messages and interview requests went unanswered.
An aide commented to The New York Times,
"There's no cameras where Tom is."
On 27 April, Kean's office released a statement indicating his expected return:
"My doctors continue to assure me that my recovery will be complete and that I will be back to the job I love very soon," Kean said in the statement posted on X.
"I expect to return to a full schedule and be at 100 percent."
Nearly a month later, Kean participated in a telephone interview with the New Jersey Globe, reaffirming his intention to run for re-election and resume public duties.
"I understand the need for public transparency, and I appreciate the support of my constituents," he said.
"I anticipate that in the next couple of weeks, I'll return to voting and to the campaign trail."
As voting commenced on Tuesday, there were still no reported sightings of Kean. The BBC has reached out to his office for comment.
Significance of the District and Political Implications
The district Kean represents is considered a swing district, characterized by its tendency to alternate between Republican and Democratic representation in each election cycle.
This district is critical for Republicans to retain in the November midterms, which will determine the balance of power in Congress. Democrats aim to unseat Kean, shift congressional control, and deliver a setback to Trump.
Given these stakes, Trump's endorsement of Kean is unsurprising. The former president has consistently endorsed candidates despite controversies or uncertainties surrounding them.
