ICE Investigates Officers' Testimony in Migrant Shooting

Two immigration agents may have provided "untruthful statements" under oath regarding the shooting of a migrant in Minneapolis last month, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

ICE acting director Todd Lyons announced that the two unnamed officers were placed on administrative leave immediately as an internal investigation commenced.

"Lying under oath is a serious federal offence," Lyons stated.

On Friday, a judge approved a motion to dismiss charges against two men accused of attacking the officers.

Details of the Incident and Investigation

The Department of Homeland Security initially reported that a federal officer shot a man in the leg after being assaulted with a shovel and broom handle by three migrants on January 14.

However, Lyons indicated in a statement that the two officers appeared to have given inaccurate testimony, and the US attorney's office is actively investigating the situation.

"Video evidence has revealed that sworn testimony provided by two separate officers appears to have made untruthful statements," Lyons said.

He further added,

"Upon conclusion of the investigation, the officers may face termination of employment, as well as potential criminal prosecution."

Background and Official Responses

Following the incident, authorities identified the two men as Venezuelan nationals residing in the US without legal status. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem commented on the condition of the agent involved in the altercation.

"An agent was 'beat up, he's bruised, he is injured, he's getting treatment, and we're thankful that he made it out alive'.
