Google Employees Pressure Firm to Sever Ties with Immigration Enforcement Agencies
Google executives are currently under significant pressure from their staff concerning the company's involvement with the federal government's immigration enforcement efforts, which have recently escalated into violent and fatal incidents.
On Friday, nearly 900 full-time Google employees published an open letter demanding increased transparency regarding how the company's technology is utilized within the US government.
Google holds contracts to provide cloud services to various federal agencies and is also connected to work related to federal immigration enforcement.
Following the letter's release, a Google employee with seven years of tenure described it as "mind-boggling" that Google continues its associations with immigration enforcement bodies.

Context of Employee Letter and Broader Industry Response
The letter from Google employees follows a similar appeal made two weeks earlier, signed by hundreds of workers from multiple companies including Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, urging all technology firms to cease their support for federal immigration enforcement operations.
Over the past year, the Trump administration intensified its efforts to forcibly remove immigrants, deploying armed agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) into numerous cities.
These operations have resulted in two high-profile killings of US citizens who were observing federal agents during enforcement actions.
Voices from Within Google
The Google employee leading the call for management action identified himself as Alex and noted his seven-year tenure at the company.
"I was proud to be working at a company with a moral compass. I'm not proud anymore,"
In 2018, after pressure from thousands of employees, Google discontinued its involvement with the Pentagon's Project Maven, which aimed to develop enhanced drone technology for military use.
Alex expressed that it is now "abhorrent" to come to work daily knowing his efforts support federal agents within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ICE, and CBP, or involve removing applications deemed "threatening" by authorities.
In October, Google announced it had removed several apps from its app store that allowed users to report and document sightings of ICE agents; Apple took similar actions.
Another Google employee, who identified herself as "S," shared that she joined Google about three years ago but would have reconsidered had she known about the company's work with federal agencies.
"This is not the company I signed up to work for – I would have never interviewed to work for a military contractor,"
Both Alex and S stated they are speaking out now because they oppose their work contributing to militarized actions against individuals.
They also criticized Google leadership, including CEO Sundar Pichai, for failing to adequately address the extent of Google's involvement with the federal government, prompting the open letter demanding greater transparency.
Employee Demands and Company Partnerships
The employees' demands include that Google withdraw its technology from any work involving DHS, ICE, and CBP, provide protections for workers from immigration enforcement activities, and hold an all-hands meeting to discuss their concerns.
Beyond Google's cloud services for federal agencies, the company entered into partnerships last year with Lockheed Martin, a major military contractor, to deploy Gemini AI models in unspecified products and services.
Google also partners with Palantir, a US company that supplies much of the technology and operating systems used by DHS, ICE, CBP, and all six branches of the US military.
Alex, S, and other signatories of the open letter have had their employment with Google verified through their registered work accounts.
A Google spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.
