James Comey Surrenders on Threat Charge

Former FBI Director James Comey surrendered to authorities on Wednesday to face charges alleging that an image he briefly shared on social media constituted a threat to the life of President Donald Trump.

The charge relates to an Instagram post shared by Comey, which displayed an image of seashells arranged on a beach to form the numbers "86 47." The term "eighty-six" is slang for "get rid of," and prosecutors claim the post encourages violence against Trump, the 47th president of the United States.

Comey denies any wrongdoing, stating he was unaware of the meaning behind the numbers, and has accused the prosecution of being politically motivated.

Second Criminal Charge Against Comey

This is the second occasion on which the Justice Department has filed criminal charges against Comey, who has been a long-standing critic of Trump.

During his brief court appearance in Virginia, Comey did not speak. However, his attorney indicated that the former FBI director intends to argue that the case represents a vindictive prosecution, essentially punishment for his outspoken criticism of Trump, according to .

Context of Political Tensions

In his second term, President Trump has publicly suggested that Justice Department officials should investigate his political opponents. The government has brought indictments against figures such as Comey and New York Attorney General Tish James, who has pursued fraud cases against the president.

Attorney General's Statement

Attorney General Todd Blanche addressed the charges on Wednesday, asserting that they were "absolutely, positively not" politically motivated.

"Of course, it's serious when you threaten the President of the United States," Blanche told CBS News, BBC's US partner. "Anybody that tries to put forward some narrative that this is just about seashells, or something to the contrary is missing the point. You cannot threaten the President of the United States."

Blanche referenced a recent security incident at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner on Saturday, where a man charged toward the ballroom where Trump was present before being stopped by the US Secret Service.

Details of the Instagram Post

Comey's original Instagram post from May 2025 featured an image of seashells on a beach arranged to spell "86 47," accompanied by the caption, "Cool shell formation on my beach walk."

Following public backlash, Comey deleted the image and issued a follow-up note on Instagram.
