Democrats Secure Florida District 87 Seat in Special Election
Democrats are projected to win a special election for Florida's District 87 state House seat, which encompasses Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach. This victory marks another unexpected outcome in the president's home region.
Emily Gregory, a first-time Democratic candidate, defeated Jon Maples, a Republican supported by Trump, in the contest for the open legislative seat.
This result contrasts with the 2024 election when a Republican candidate won the district by a 19 percentage point margin.
Implications for Democratic Momentum
Democrats have shown strong performances in special elections during Trump's second term. Gregory's win may signal growing momentum for the party ahead of the upcoming congressional midterm elections later this year.
Ken Martin, chair of the Democratic National Committee, celebrated the outcome on X, stating that voters had "sent a message."
"If Democrats can win in Trump's backyard, we sure as hell can win anywhere across the country. Onward to November!" Martin wrote.
Trump and Republican Support for Maples
Donald Trump endorsed Jon Maples through a post on Truth Social, urging "great patriots" to participate in the special election.
Additionally, Republican Congressman Byron Donalds, who is campaigning for Florida governor, recorded an endorsement video supporting Maples and encouraging voters to select him.
Recent Trends in State House Special Elections
Since Trump assumed office at the start of 2025, Democrats have flipped multiple state house seats in special elections.
The midterm elections, scheduled for November, will include contests for the U.S. House of Representatives, one-third of the U.S. Senate, as well as various governor and state legislature positions.
These elections, traditionally held midway through a president's term, often serve as a gauge of national sentiment and the prevailing strength of the president's party.
