A California man arrested near Donald Trump’s Los Angeles-area golf course ahead of the president’s visit is facing additional charges after authorities released new details about the investigation. Jeanine John Taele, 38, was detained at the Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes after being seen near the grounds with a pistol and armour-piercing ammunition in his vehicle, according to investigators.
What happened at the Trump National Golf Course?
Authorities say federal agents first observed Taele on 31 July near the golf grounds, where he was wearing an earpiece and taking photographs and videos of security agents assessing the property. He returned on 2 August, two days before Trump was scheduled to visit California for a Republican party fundraising dinner.
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said Taele was “observed walking throughout the golf course grounds taking photographs and videos and appearing to monitor security-planning activities”. Authorities said he approached federal agents and told them he was employed by the state department and was there for a security detail.
What did officers find?
After detaining Taele for “suspicious” behavior, deputies found a loaded magazine in his pocket. In his pickup truck, parked at the golf club, officers found a loaded 9mm pistol, binoculars and a badge labeled “security protection agent”, authorities said.
Investigators also said they recovered a trove of weapons from his residence in the nearby city of Downey, including a .45-caliber pistol, body armor and an illegally modified AR-type pistol. Law enforcement officials also found notebooks containing “concerning statements” in the home, though the sheriff’s office declined to comment on the nature of the remarks.
What charges is he facing?
Taele is being held at a downtown Los Angeles jail on state charges, according to booking records, and was not yet in federal custody, a spokesperson for the US attorney’s office said. He faces a misdemeanor charge for carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle and two felony charges for possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun and the manufacture, importation or sale of a large-capacity magazine, court records show.
He was also federally charged with possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle found at his home, officials said. The complaint alleges the firearm was an illegally modified AR-style rifle with a barrel cut down to 10in (25cm) from 14in (35cm). A federal court hearing scheduled for Wednesday was cancelled.
The Los Angeles County public defender’s office, which is representing Taele in the state criminal case, declined to comment.
What has Trump said about the case?
Trump addressed the arrest on Tuesday, telling Fox News that “only consequential presidents” are targeted and “I am definitely consequential”, which he said brought him “a little solace”.
The FBI’s Los Angeles office said in a statement that “there is no room for error, particularly in light of previous attempts on President Trump’s life”.
What else is known about Taele?
Taele already appeared in court on state weapons charges and a second-degree robbery charge for an unrelated incident, according to the second source. The US Marine Corps said he was a corporal who served in Iraq in 2008 and Afghanistan in 2010, and worked as a warehouse clerk. It said he received numerous commendations, including an award for good conduct, during service from 2008 to 2016.
State records show Taele was issued a firearm permit in October 2016 for .40-caliber, .45-caliber and 9mm weapons, and that the permit expired in 2020. Records also show he was a licensed security guard in California between February 2019 and February 2025.

The arrest came shortly before Trump’s planned visit to the area, adding to heightened concern around the president’s security. It also comes after other recent cases involving alleged threats against Trump, including the 2024 rally shooting in Pennsylvania and the conviction of Ryan Routh for attempting to assassinate Trump on a Florida golf course in September 2024.
