Charity Reports High Debt Levels in South East
A recent report by Christians Against Poverty (CAP) reveals that individuals across the South East region carry an average debt of £14,000. The charity, which partners with local churches, estimates that it typically takes about 10 years for someone to repay this amount.
Personal Story: Gaynor Lake's Debt Journey
Gaynor Lake from Woking reached out to CAP after experiencing heating problems in her home. Her financial difficulties escalated over time, culminating in debts totaling £26,000.
"My gas bill was higher where I was trying to get heating in the house, but all my bills were going up - this was over a 10-year period.
It was hard and even though I got a winter fuel payment, it was gone.
I was getting through £100 a week when it was so cold."
Upon contacting the charity, Gaynor's debt was assessed at £26,000, an amount CAP notes would generally require about 20 years to repay. The charity recommended a Debt Relief Order, which has allowed her to reset her finances and begin rebuilding stability.
Currently, Gaynor is carefully managing her budget and gradually regaining control over her financial situation.
Government Response and Initiatives
A government spokesperson commented on the broader context of poverty and financial hardship:
"Our efforts to turn the tide on poverty after years of rising hardship are making a real difference - household incomes have risen 5% in real terms, around 100,000 fewer children are in deep material poverty and food bank usage has fallen."
The government also highlighted its Child Poverty Strategy, aimed at lifting 550,000 children out of poverty by 2030. Additional measures include efforts to reduce the cost of living through increases to the National Living Wage and the first sustained above-inflation rise to Universal Credit.
"Our landmark Child Poverty Strategy will lift 550,000 children out of poverty in 2030 and we're helping drive down the cost of living, by raising the National Living Wage and the first ever sustained above inflation increase to Universal Credit."
