Volunteers Save Surplus Food at Silverstone

Towcester Community Larder reported receiving a variety of "weird and wonderful" food donations during the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where 564,000 fans attended.

With such a large crowd, a significant amount of uneaten food is generated, but approximately 50 volunteers from the Towcester Community Larder in Northamptonshire have been actively working to prevent this food from going to waste.

Last year, the volunteers collected 32 tonnes of unused food through multiple collection points, and this year they have been equally proactive.

Since Sunday, they have already saved 15 tonnes of food, and Katie Steele from the larder anticipates that the collection of "weird and wonderful" items will continue to increase their donation totals.

Ongoing Collection Efforts

The volunteers have been working continuously since Sunday and plan to continue their efforts until Thursday.

The community larder operates a membership scheme that allows surplus produce to be purchased at discounted rates. Steele emphasized the volunteers' commitment to "save as much food from the bin as possible."

"When you've got that many people coming through the doors inevitably there is stuff that is destined for the bin, unless we can step in and rescue it."

This marks the sixth year the larder has undertaken this task at the Silverstone circuit, which hosted the largest race weekend attendance in Formula 1 history this year.

Steele described the demanding schedule, noting that they finished sorting the first load of food at about 01:00 BST on Monday before returning to the circuit a few hours later. The pick-ups are expected to continue through Thursday.

Variety of Food Items Collected

Steele highlighted the urgency of distributing the food promptly to prevent spoilage.

"We need to get the food out as soon as we can before it perishes," Steele said.

She mentioned that the collection includes a large quantity of lettuce and salad items as well as unusual food items.

Even canned water, pop and lots of milk, ice cream and 5,000 eggs.
You never know what you're going to get when you open a fridge."

Additionally, edible mixed flowers have been donated to the community larder.

Distribution Details

The collected items will be available at the Riverside Resource Centre, located externally on Islington Road, Towcester, starting Monday from 18:30. Remaining stock will be offered during the larder's regular sessions on Wednesday from 16:15 to 17:00 and Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:15.

Towcester Community Larder will continue to make several collection stops at Silverstone to retrieve uneaten food.
