US Bomber Lands at UK Air Base
A large US bomber capable of carrying 24 cruise missiles has landed in the United Kingdom.
The 146ft (44.5m) B-1 Lancer arrived at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on Friday.

This deployment follows Sir Keir Starmer granting the United States permission to use British military bases for defensive strikes specifically targeting Iranian missile sites.

Earlier in the week, Western officials indicated that the UK was prepared to host the bombers and anticipated their arrival within days.
Aircraft Specifications and Capabilities
The B-1 Lancer is piloted by a crew of four and features a wingspan of 137ft (41.8m). It weighs 86 tonnes and is recognized as the fastest bomber in the US Air Force fleet, capable of speeds exceeding 900mph (1,448.4km/h), according to Boeing.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stated on Thursday that the strikes on Iran were "about to surge dramatically."
"It's more fighter squadrons, it's more capabilities, it's more defensive capabilities. And it's more bomber pulses more frequently," he said.
Diplomatic Engagements and Regional Support
Amid increased targeting of Gulf States by Iran in the ongoing conflict, Sir Keir Starmer held discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Friday.
A Downing Street spokeswoman confirmed that Sir Keir assured the kingdom's de facto leader that the UK "stood ready to support the defence of the kingdom" if necessary.
The prime minister also announced that "additional British fighter jets, helicopters and a destroyer were being sent to the region," the spokeswoman added.
"The leaders also discussed stepping up intelligence cooperation to support defensive operations and protect civilians," she said.
Regarding energy concerns, the Crown Prince outlined "steps the kingdom had taken to boost global oil supply and support market stability," according to the spokeswoman.
Advanced Features of the B-1 Lancer
Nicknamed "the Bone," the US bomber is equipped with advanced radar and GPS systems designed to enhance targeting accuracy. It also includes electronic jammers, radar warning receivers, and a decoy system to defend against enemy threats.
RAF Fairford's Role and UK Military Position
RAF Fairford, situated on the border of Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, has historically been used by the US for long-range heavy bombing missions.
While the UK has authorized the US to use British bases for defensive strikes on Iranian facilities, it has not directly participated in offensive operations.
RAF jets have been actively intercepting missiles and drones launched by Iran targeting allied forces in the region.
Political Perspectives on Military Action
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, speaking on BBC Breakfast, emphasized the need for more proactive measures.
"They need to do more than that, they need to stop the missile sites, you need to go to the source."
Badenoch has increased her calls for the government to permit RAF strikes on Iran's missile launch sites.
"You can't always wait for people to attack you. Sometimes you have to make sure that you get there first to stop their ability to hurt your citizens," she said. She added that she did not want to see "troops on the ground."
Government Statements on Military Strategy
Earlier on Friday, the prime minister's spokesman told reporters:
"We've been very clear that our response has been to allow the US limited, specific and defensive use of our bases to protect British lives, British interests and our allies in the region."
He further explained that the UK military's focus remains on intercepting drones in the air, while the US targets missile launch sites within Iran.
"We have consistently said that we'll take the necessary steps to prevent future strikes which, as we've set out over the course of the week, is allowing the US to take out those missiles at source whilst we are defending the skies."
