Metropolitan Police to Request Charges in Grenfell Tower Fire Case

The Metropolitan Police will request that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) consider charging up to 57 individuals and 20 companies in connection with the Grenfell Tower fire disaster.

During an update at New Scotland Yard, the police announced plans to submit evidence files to the CPS by the end of September this year.

A final decision on whether to bring charges may take until June 2027, marking 10 years since the tragic fire in west London that claimed 72 lives. Should the CPS decide to prosecute, trials are unlikely to commence before 2029.

Response from Grenfell United

A spokesperson for Grenfell United, representing some bereaved families and survivors, described this development as

"an important step in a process that has already taken far too long"
.

Findings of the Public Inquiry

The Grenfell Tower fire was attributed to a series of failures involving government bodies, "dishonest" companies, and deficiencies within the fire service, according to a public inquiry.

Operation Northleigh Investigation

Operation Northleigh, the £150 million investigation into the disaster on 14 June 2017, has scrutinized the actions of 15,000 individuals across 700 organizations. This represents the largest and most complex investigation ever conducted by the Metropolitan Police.

Calls for Accountability and Court Resources

Grenfell United urged that there be no further delays in legal proceedings and emphasized the necessity of holding those responsible accountable.

The group stated:

"For our community, this is not news we meet with celebration. We meet it with caution, grief and determination. We have waited almost a decade for accountability."

They further called on the Ministry of Justice and the government to ensure that courts are adequately resourced to facilitate swift hearings of any prosecutions related to Grenfell.
