Wildfires Continue Across the UK
Drone footage captured last month reveals the extensive scale of the moorland wildfire currently affecting the UK.
Wildfires are ongoing across the United Kingdom as firefighters contend with "extreme pressure" due to a prolonged heatwave, according to Phil Garrigan, chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC).
"There's no real respite... There doesn't seem to be any rain forecast and that becomes problematic,"Garrigan told BBC Breakfast, emphasizing that the dry weather has increased the risk of uncontrollable fires.
He added that approximately 19 fires remain active nationwide.
Major Incidents and Affected Areas
Major incidents were declared on Sunday in Conwy, north Wales, and Glossop, Derbyshire, with firefighters continuing to combat the flames as of Tuesday.
The blaze near Conwy Mountain and Sychnant Pass in Conwy county began on Sunday.
Additional wildfires over the weekend affected regions including Hampshire, Durham, West Sussex, East Sussex, Devon, and Somerset.
Situation in Wales
In Wales, the major incident declared for the Conwy wildfire has now been brought under control, as reported by Justin Evans, assistant chief fire officer of North Wales Fire and Rescue Service.
However, firefighting efforts continue at several active sites, including Braichmelyn forestry near Bethesda and the Rhinogydd mountain range near Harlech.
Farmer Gareth Wyn Jones, whose property borders Conwy Mountain, described the event:
"I had never seen anything of that scale. It was unreal,"he said, noting that while ponies grazing on the mountain escaped unharmed, he was concerned for a neighbour's pigs as flames swept through adjacent land.
"The biggest worry was that they were going to suffocate in the smoke, but the smoke did carry over them,"he added, confirming the animals survived.
Peak District Moorland Fire
Firefighters remain at the scene of a significant moorland fire at Tintwistle Moor near Dovestone Reservoir in the Peak District.
Between 30 and 40 firefighters are actively engaged in tackling the blaze, which started on 24 June and has consumed approximately 260 hectares (642 acres) of moorland and woodland.
Ben Levy, senior fire chief at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, warned crews of the ongoing challenges:
"A very challenging and gruelling day ahead,"he said, citing high temperatures, strong winds, and dry conditions that continue to fuel the fire.
Levy urged the public to exercise caution in the countryside to minimize the risk of further wildfires.
On Monday, a 20-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of arson following reports of fireworks being discharged in the area.
Dorset Wildfire
In Dorset, firefighters spent the night addressing a wildfire on heathland near Agglestone, close to Studland.
Smoke was reported at approximately 17:00 BST on Monday, with crews from seven stations combating the blaze until 20:00. Relief teams were expected to remain throughout Tuesday.
Fire Risk Warnings and Causes
Natural England has issued warnings of a "very high" or "exceptional" risk of fires across much of England and Wales over the coming days.
While dry weather alone does not cause wildfires, ignition sources such as sparks from barbecues or discarded cigarettes are necessary to start fires.
However, dry conditions reduce moisture in vegetation, making it more flammable and capable of sustaining and spreading fires.
