Teenager Injured in Sectarian Assault in Londonderry City Centre

A teenage boy sustained a broken nose following an incident that police are investigating as a sectarian attack in Londonderry city centre.

The assault occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning at Shipquay Place, close to Guildhall Square.

Deputy Mayor Comments on the Attack

Deputy Mayor Niree McMorris stated that the boy was targeted because he is a Protestant.

"All too often we hear of these mindless attacks happening and it concerns me that some day these attacks will lead to a fatality,"

she said.

Details of the Incident

McMorris explained that the teenager had been attending an 18th birthday party earlier that night. Afterward, he went to get something to eat and was then assaulted by a large crowd who directed sectarian abuse at him.

"The young guy who was only 16 received severe facial injuries and has had to get medical attention in hospital,"

McMorris added.

Appeal for Information

The deputy mayor has urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the police.
