Teen Pleads Not Guilty to Murder of 9-Year-Old Girl in Somerset

Teenager Denies Murder Charge

A 16-year-old boy has pleaded not guilty to the murder of nine-year-old Aria Thorpe, who was fatally stabbed in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.

The youth, whose identity is protected due to his age, faces charges related to the death of Aria on 15 December last year.

Details of the Incident

Aria was declared dead after police responded to a call at her residence in the Mead Vale area of Weston-super-Mare at 18:09 GMT on the day of the incident. A coroner's court later determined that she died from a single stab wound to the chest.

Court Proceedings

On Friday, the accused appeared at Bristol Crown Court, where he entered a not guilty plea to the murder charge. The trial has been scheduled to begin on 15 June.

The defendant was arrested shortly after the incident, at 18:19 GMT, in the nearby area of Worle.

During the 20-minute hearing, he wore a white shirt and red tie and maintained a forward gaze throughout.

Prosecutor Ray Tully KC informed the court that the trial is anticipated to last approximately two weeks.

Judge Martin Picton upheld existing reporting restrictions that prevent the publication of the defendant's identity and confirmed that the accused will remain in custody until the trial.

Family Tributes

Aria's father, Tom Thorpe, paid tribute to his daughter, describing her as:

"a brave, kind-hearted and a beautiful innocent soul"

Relatives on her mother's side also shared their sentiments, stating she was:

"the most beautiful little soul – happy-go-lucky, full of light, and joy"
