Scotland's First Minister John Swinney has declined an invitation from US President Donald Trump to attend a state banquet at the White House scheduled for next week.

The Scottish government confirmed that Swinney "politely declined" the invitation to the event on April 28, which is part of the state visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla to the United States.

A four-minute phone call between President Trump and Swinney took place on Monday, during which the invitation was the main topic of discussion.

A spokesperson for the First Minister stated that Swinney informed Trump he was unable to attend due to his commitments campaigning for the upcoming Scottish Parliament election.
