Grime Artist Skepta Faces Drug-Driving Trial
British grime artist and producer Skepta was arrested following a police stop for reckless driving, a court was informed.
The 43-year-old musician was taken to a police station after officers reported detecting the smell of cannabis in his vehicle. A roadside test subsequently returned a positive result for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component found in cannabis plants.
He was charged with driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the legal limit. The incident occurred on London Road in High Wycombe on 14 May 2024.
Skepta is currently standing trial at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court under his real name, Joseph Adenuga.
Details from the Police Stop
PC Talan O'Neill, the Thames Valley Police officer who stopped Adenuga, testified that he observed the musician overtaking another vehicle in the outside lane while exceeding the 30mph (48km/h) speed limit.
Upon pulling the vehicle over, the officer detected a "smell of cannabis" emanating from the rapper's Mercedes-Maybach. A roadside drug test was administered at 10:54 GMT.
Prosecution Statement and Court Proceedings
Prosecutor Lucy Curran stated:
"He was arrested when that sample came back with a positive result for the THC component in cannabis."
The court was informed that Adenuga, who resides in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, remained compliant throughout the entire process.
