Renfrewshire Council Staff to Receive Additional Public Holiday
Staff at Renfrewshire Council will be granted an extra public holiday on Monday, 15 June, in recognition of Scotland's men's team competing in the World Cup.
Scotland's opening match in the tournament is scheduled for the early hours of the previous day, against Haiti.
The proposal received unanimous approval from councillors, who expressed hopes that the holiday would enhance employee morale, foster community spirit, and support the hospitality sector.
The additional holiday is anticipated to incur an estimated cost between £80,000 and £100,000 for the council.
Earlier this year, the Scottish government officially designated the date as a national bank holiday; however, the decision to observe the holiday rests with local authorities.
Council Leadership Comments on the Holiday
Councillor John Shaw, convener of the board, emphasized the significance of the day off as a recognition of a rare national event meaningful to many staff members.
"Recognising a rare national occasion that will mean a great deal to many of our staff."
He further stated:
"Scotland reaching the World Cup is something that brings excitement, pride and a real sense of togetherness and, given I was in my 20s the last time it happened, it's not a regular occurrence.
By approving the additional public holiday, we show that we as a council are prepared to share in that moment and reflect the national significance of the occasion."
The decision will require further approval from the education and children's services policy board regarding school and nursery closures.
Councillor Shaw, representing Renfrew North and Braehead for the SNP, acknowledged the financial implications but described the cost as a one-off expense that would yield broader benefits, including increased revenue for local pubs and improved staff morale.
Councillor Jim Paterson, SNP representative for Renfrew South and Gallowhill, noted that although match times during the tournament—hosted in the USA, Mexico, and Canada—are inconvenient, there is expected to be a local buzz surrounding the event.
Scotland's Qualification and Group Stage Details
Scotland secured their place in the tournament in November by scoring twice in stoppage time, with goals from Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean, to defeat Denmark 4-2 at Hampden Park and top their qualifying group.
The team has been drawn into a group with Haiti, Morocco, and Brazil for the competition.
