Police Apology and Settlement
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has issued an apology to the family of Fergal McCusker, a man murdered by the Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF), following a settlement reached at the High Court in Belfast.
Fergal McCusker, aged 28, was fatally shot in Maghera, County Londonderry, in January 1998.
As part of the settlement, the PSNI stated that while it does not accept liability for the case, it acknowledges that the investigation did not meet the expected standards.
The PSNI also recognised that these investigative shortcomings caused additional distress to the family.

Judicial Remarks on Resolution
Mr Justice Rooney praised both parties for resolving the settled claim, describing it as an
"example of how a civil claim can bring closure".
He further noted that the police's acceptance of responsibility and acknowledgement of lessons learned from such cases enhances public confidence, calling it
"a step forward".
Case Details
Fergal McCusker's body was discovered behind a youth club in Maghera.
Despite several suspects being arrested during the investigation, no individual has ever been prosecuted or convicted for his murder.
Prior to his death, Mr McCusker had returned from America where he had been employed.
