Investigation Update on Ann Widdecombe's Death
Devon and Cornwall Police have stated there is "nothing to suggest it was politically motivated" in the investigation into the alleged murder of Ann Widdecombe.
Following the arrest of a 28-year-old white British man in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Saturday, the police confirmed they are not seeking any additional suspects in connection with her death.
The former Member of Parliament and Member of the European Parliament, aged 78, was discovered deceased at her residence in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday. She had sustained serious injuries, and authorities believe the attack occurred nearly 24 hours prior to the discovery.
Official Statements and Ongoing Investigation
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman emphasized that officers remain "open-minded" regarding the potential motive behind the attack and indicated that there is no perceived threat to the wider public at this time.
The arrest was conducted shortly after 21:00 BST by officers from Counter Terrorism Police North East and South Yorkshire Police, acting on behalf of Devon and Cornwall Police.
Addressing concerns about terrorism, Longman told reporters on Sunday that there is no evidence to suggest the incident was terrorism-related.
Family Support and Public Appeal
The family of the former Conservative minister and later Reform UK spokesperson have been informed of the latest developments and are receiving support from specialist officers.
Devon and Cornwall Police have received over 120 reports containing information related to the case. Longman urged anyone who has not yet come forward to do so "as a priority."
