Man to Stand Trial for Smuggling 14 Albanian Nationals

A man is scheduled to face trial accused of smuggling 14 Albanian nationals into Scotland concealed within a lorry.

Patrick John McKinney, aged 24, from Coshquin in Northern Ireland, was detained in December 2024 after authorities stopped a truck at the Loch Ryan ferry terminal in Cairnryan, Dumfries and Galloway.

Prosecutors allege that McKinney culpably and recklessly concealed 14 men inside a compartment located at the rear of the vehicle.

Trial Proceedings and Charges

At the High Court in Glasgow, Brian McConnachie KC, representing the defense, stated that his client denies the charges. A trial date has been set for 26 July of the following year.

The offence is claimed to have occurred under severe weather conditions while the lorry, described as open-sided and in an "unroadworthy" condition, was transporting the men, thereby endangering their lives.

McKinney faces additional accusations of transporting the 14 men from Northern Ireland to Scotland with knowledge or reasonable cause to believe that this would contravene immigration laws.

Details of the Case and Allegations

The case was heard at the High Court in Glasgow where McKinney was charged with culpable and reckless conduct, as well as an offence under the Immigration Act.

The allegations are further aggravated by their connection to human trafficking activities.
