Harbour Redevelopment Project Launches

Work on redeveloping a historic harbour in southern Scotland is scheduled to commence following the appointment of a main contractor.

Carlisle-based construction company, Cubby Construction, has been selected to lead the £15.6 million project in Annan. The redevelopment will feature a new maritime heritage centre, event space, leisure lagoon, and cafe.

Funding and Historical Context

Funding for the project has been secured from multiple sources, including the Scottish government, the UK government's Levelling Up Fund, Dumfries and Galloway Council, and South of Scotland Enterprise.

Historically, Annan harbour was a bustling centre for shipbuilding, commerce, and fishing. However, it experienced a decline during the latter half of the 20th century.

Community Impact and Project Significance

The group overseeing the redevelopment described the appointment of the contractor as a significant milestone, marking the beginning of an important new chapter for the town.

"After many years of decline and neglect, the dreams and vision of a few determined people are about to be realised," said Mike Rodger, chair of the Annan Harbour Action Group.
"Designs have been prepared, the public consulted, all options costed and the necessary funding secured.
Now, after six years of preparation, contractors have been appointed and contracts signed, and work will begin next week."
