Judge Emphasizes Trial Timeline
A judge has expressed that he would be "extremely disappointed" if the trial involving Sir Jeffrey Donaldson and his wife, Lady Eleanor Donaldson, does not commence in three weeks' time.
The couple face a combined total of 23 charges connected to alleged historical sexual abuse, all of which they deny.
Upcoming Pre-Trial Review
Judge Paul Ramsey has scheduled another pre-trial review hearing for 19 May, during which final medical reports concerning Mrs. Donaldson's health will be evaluated.
The trial is set to take place at Newry Crown Court beginning on 26 May.
Judge's Position on Trial Schedule
During a brief hearing held this morning, Judge Ramsey stated he is "very firm" on his intention for the trial to proceed as planned and that this remains his expectation.
He acknowledged that the public may have concerns regarding any potential delays but noted that there is "genuine medical evidence" that requires consideration.
He further commented that it is in the interest of all parties involved for the trial to commence as scheduled.
Medical Evidence and Legal Perspectives
Mrs. Donaldson's legal representative described her "medical picture is presently less than clear" and cautioned that it would be "foolish" to speculate on the matter.
"Let's see where the medical evidence takes us," he added.
Trial Duration and Charges
At a previous hearing, it was indicated that the jury trial is expected to last up to four weeks.
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, aged 63, faces 18 charges allegedly committed between 1985 and 2008, including one count of rape.
Lady Donaldson, aged 59, is charged with five counts related to aiding and abetting.
Neither defendant was required to attend today's hearing, nor will they be required to appear at the hearing scheduled for 19 May.
The couple were arrested at their home in County Down two years ago.
