HMS Dragon Arrives in Eastern Mediterranean for Maintenance
The Royal Navy type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon has docked in the eastern Mediterranean following technical issues related to its water systems.
On 3 March, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the deployment of the type 45 destroyer to bolster security around RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, two days after the base was targeted by a Shahed 136 drone.
HMS Dragon departed Portsmouth on 10 March after the crew completed six days of work that would typically require six weeks, according to Defence Secretary John Healey.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed on Tuesday that the warship remains capable of sailing at short notice if necessary. The minor technical issue affecting the onboard water systems will be addressed during the stop, but it has not impacted the ship's operational capabilities. All crew members have maintained access to water, catering services, and shower facilities.
"HMS Dragon is undertaking a routine logistics stop and a short maintenance period in the eastern Mediterranean, allowing the ship to take onboard provisions, optimise systems and conduct maintenance.
HMS Dragon will remain at a very high level of readiness during this period, able to sail at short notice if required.
The UK continues to maintain a robust and layered defensive presence in the eastern Mediterranean, working in co-ordination with allies.
This includes Typhoon and F-35 jets, Wildcat and Merlin helicopters, and advanced counter-drone and air defence systems."
The MoD also indicated that the logistics stop was planned as part of HMS Dragon's deployment schedule.
HMS Dragon is among several British military assets in the region tasked with defending UK bases and allied nations against Iranian-made drones and other threats. During the stop, the vessel's weapons and systems will be further optimised.
On Sunday, an MoD source dismissed social media reports claiming that a vessel in the Mediterranean had been struck by Hezbollah missiles as false.
These rumours circulated over Easter, alleging that a British warship had been damaged by the Lebanese militant group, mistakenly identified as an Israeli vessel. The MoD source confirmed these claims were untrue.
The deployment of HMS Dragon to the eastern Mediterranean followed criticism of the British government's delayed naval response after Greece and France dispatched additional naval support to the region following the attack on RAF Akrotiri.
The Cypriot government expressed concern over the drone strike's success, suggesting that the presence of the British base on the island should be reconsidered.
The warship is equipped with the Sea Viper missile system, capable of intercepting drones and missiles. The MoD stated last month that this system would "play a vital role in safeguarding UK assets and interests in the Middle East."
