Concerns Over Rising Heating Oil Costs
Farmers and residents have expressed concern as heating oil prices have reportedly "doubled" following the escalation of the conflict in Iran.
Wiltshire Council has stated that its teams are on standby to provide additional support to residents facing difficulties. Approximately 8% of Wiltshire's population depends on heating oil, which is significantly higher than the national average of 3%.
In the neighbouring county of Somerset, Sarah Dyke, the MP for Glastonbury and Somerton, has written to the government urging increased assistance for rural communities. She highlighted the risk that many people in the county "will not be able to afford to heat their homes".
Government Response and Market Impact
Chancellor Rachel Reeves acknowledged the "unique challenges" faced by households using heating oil and committed to holding meetings to develop an action plan.
The conflict began after Iran issued warnings to vessels against passing through the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf. This strait is a critical shipping route, with about 20% of the world's oil and gas transported through it. However, marine traffic has slowed in recent days due to the tensions.
Oil distributors have advised consumers to purchase only what they need and anticipate that prices may decrease once the situation related to the conflict stabilises.
Local Experiences with Rising Costs
In Wiltshire, resident Mike Blacker participates in an oil syndicate, where members collectively purchase large quantities of oil to reduce costs.
Blacker, who resides in Chippenham, reported that oil prices have more than doubled within a few days, with some suppliers quoting prices as high as £1.25 per litre.
"It always has a knock-on effect, any wars, especially in that region.
It's [heating oil] more than doubled in price over a couple of weeks."
Elsewhere in Wiltshire, farmer Ceri Cryer is facing difficulties obtaining diesel for her tractors, with suppliers indicating low stock levels.
She explained, "We need the tractor to be scraping up the muck, to feed the animals, for hedge-cutting and we've also started putting the fertiliser out." She emphasised, "Having the tractor going is crucial to our business."
Cryer, who operates Brinkworth Dairy, was recently quoted a price of £1.49 per litre, compared to her usual rate of 0.79p.
She added that farmers feel "out of control" regarding the rising costs of essentials such as heating oil.

Price Trends and Council Support
Heating oil prices surged following the onset of the conflict but have recently stabilised amid reports that some countries may release oil from their stockpiles to ease supply pressures.
Wiltshire Council officials remain prepared to assist social tenants struggling with heating expenses, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Ian Thorn, leader of Wiltshire Council, stated:
"We know that rising energy costs, which are often impacted by world events, including the price of heating oil, are putting pressure on many households, particularly in rural areas.
We understand how difficult this can be, and our teams are here to support any tenants or residents who may be struggling."
