Argyle Street East Avenue Revamp to Commence
Work to revamp one of Glasgow's busiest streets is scheduled to begin next month. The Argyle Street East Avenue project will involve redesigning and expanding pavement areas, creating new public and green spaces, and resurfacing roads and cycle lanes.
This initiative is part of Glasgow's broader £140 million Avenues programme, which aims to rejuvenate several city centre streets that local authorities have identified as experiencing decline.
Despite the intended improvements, the plans have faced criticism on social media from local residents who report ongoing disruptions in the area. The Argyle Street East phase is set to start on 16 June.
The Argyle East Avenue will stretch from Central Station to just beyond Glasgow Cross and will be delivered in four distinct, phased sections along the route.
Councillor Angus Millar, the convener for City Centre Recovery at Glasgow City Council, stated: "Argyle Street, Trongate and Glasgow Cross are such historic parts of town which have resonated with Glaswegians over generations, but they've undeniably endured decades of decline.
This investment is about revitalising these famous streets, complementing the hundreds of millions of pounds of development which is emerging in the area and giving real confidence to this part of the city."
He further noted that the overall Avenues programme is focused on creating more attractive spaces throughout the city centre.
However, he acknowledged that some disruption during the works is unavoidable, given the scale of the Avenues project.
Progress on Other Avenues and Argyle West Update
Several other components of the programme are nearing completion. The Cowcaddens Road and Dobbie's Loan Avenue near Glasgow Caledonian University, along with Buchanan Street Bus Station, are scheduled to open next week. Additionally, the redevelopment of George Square will see the road on the north side of the square reopen in early June.
The city council confirmed that the Argyle West Avenue phase is now back on track for completion as planned, following delays caused by a fire on Union Street earlier this year.
The first phase of Argyle East Avenue to commence will cover the stretch from the junction with Queen Street to Stockwell Street. This will be followed by the Four Corners area to Queen Street, then from Trongate to Glasgow Cross, and onward to Moir Street on the Gallowgate.
The entire project is scheduled for completion by June 2029. A public engagement event regarding the Argyle East and Stockwell Street plans will be held at the St Enoch shopping centre on 20 May from 11:00 to 15:00.
