Cooper Supports Starmer’s Stance on UK Interests

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has affirmed that Sir Keir Starmer is "right to stand up for Britain's interests" following intensified criticism from former US President Donald Trump regarding the prime minister's handling of the Iran conflict.

Trump, in a social media post, commented on the UK's consideration of deploying aircraft carriers to the Middle East. However, he appeared dismissive of the potential move, stating:

"We don't need people that join Wars after we've already won!"

While the Ministry of Defence confirmed that one aircraft carrier has been placed on advanced readiness, Cooper refrained from confirming whether it would be dispatched to the region.

UK Government’s Independent Foreign Policy

Addressing Trump's criticism, Cooper emphasized that the UK government would not necessarily align with the US president on every matter. Speaking on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, she remarked:

"It's for the US president to decide what he thinks is in the US national interest, and that's for him to do.
But it is our job as the UK government to decide what's in the UK national interest, and that doesn't mean simply agreeing with other countries or outsourcing our foreign policy to other countries."

UK’s Role in Iran Conflict

The UK did not participate in the initial US-Israel strikes on Iran but later authorized the US to use British bases for defensive strikes. Additionally, the UK has deployed RAF jets to the region to intercept missiles and drones launched by Iran targeting UK allies.

Views from Former Prime Minister Tony Blair

On Friday, former Labour Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair, who led the UK into the Iraq war in 2003, expressed at a private event that the UK should have supported the strikes from the outset. He described the US as an "indispensable cornerstone" of the UK's security and asserted that allies should "show up" regardless of the sitting US president.

Learning from Past Conflicts

Cooper, who served as a junior minister in Blair's government during the 2003 Iraq invasion, highlighted the importance of learning from past mistakes. She stated:

"It is important to learn lessons from what went wrong"
"that included recognising that all our decisions need to be about what is right for British citizens."

Balancing UK-US Relations

The foreign secretary noted that some political figures advocate for unquestioning agreement with the US, while others oppose any joint action. She argued that neither extreme is appropriate, emphasizing a balanced approach to UK-US relations.
