Community Reacts to Ann Widdecombe's Death and Ongoing Investigation

The residents of the village where Ann Widdecombe lived have expressed profound shock following her sudden death and the ensuing murder inquiry.

A police cordon remains established at Widdecombe's Rest, the name given by Ann Widdecombe to her Dartmoor residence symbolizing her retirement. This name now carries a tragic connotation.

The small village of Haytor Vale, home to fewer than 200 people and located on the edge of Dartmoor, is grappling with the distressing news that authorities suspect foul play in the death of the former government minister.

Widdecombe was discovered with severe head injuries on Thursday morning. As police arrest a man over 270 miles (430 km) away in South Yorkshire, local residents in Devon are coping with grief and disbelief.

"It shouldn't have happened, it's horrific," said one neighbour. "It's very, very safe around here."
Another added, "It's unbelievable someone could do something like that."

Typically, the village during summer months is frequented by walkers, families, and nature enthusiasts; however, it is now dominated by police, forensic teams, and journalists.

There have been numerous tributes to the former Maidstone MP from politicians and others who knew her nationally.

Near her Devon home, flowers have been placed against a "Please drive slowly" sign.

Locally, there is widespread horror over the death of a woman who had become "just a person in the community" since relocating there 18 years ago.

Neighbour Alison Gilbert described Widdecombe as "a really nice woman" with a strong sense of humour.

"She didn't deserve to die like that," said Simon Gilbert.

Another neighbour recalled her as "well-liked and accepted."

Community Concerns and Police Activity

Jane Parsons, a local resident, noted that the ongoing police investigation has left the community worried.

Widdecombe was known to be a regular attendee at the Abbey Church at Buckfast Abbey, where the community stated she would be "missed and fondly remembered." The monastic community extended its "heartfelt condolences to her family and friends."

Her former long-time driver, Peter Horrall, who had placed flowers near her home, reflected on her character as "great, very kind."

"It had been 'a privilege' to drive her," he said.
"I liked her because if you asked her a question, you'd get an answer - no mucking about."

In the nearby village of Ilsington, a short drive along winding Devon roads, Widdecombe was often seen at the local shop. Villagers there recalled her always making time for a "smile and a wave."

Uniformed police officers have been conducting door-to-door visits, checking on residents and seeking information that may assist the investigation.

As inquiries proceed, villagers remain awaiting further updates while reflecting on the events.
