A grey Volvo with a young child inside was stolen from Long Thorpe Lane in Wakefield at about 20:30 BST on Wednesday and later abandoned in Leeds, police said. The child has been returned to their family, and officers said the recovery happened within 15 minutes near Woodlesford Lock in Leeds.
What happened during the theft?
West Yorkshire Police said the vehicle was taken while the child's parents were nearby. It is believed the child, who was not related to the driver, was left in the car after the suspect ran off and was then looked after by officers.
Have any arrests been made?
No arrest have been made and inquiries are ongoing, West Yorkshire Police said.
The force added:
"The child was already in the car when it was stolen, but was returned to their family safely."
