Bishop of Lincoln Arrested on Sexual Assault Suspicion
The Bishop of Lincoln, the Right Reverend Stephen Conway, has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.
Lincolnshire Police stated that the arrest is part of an "ongoing investigation following an allegation that a man was sexually assaulted between 2018 and 2025."
Earlier, the Church of England announced that Conway had been suspended from ministry while a "safeguarding complaint" is under investigation and that the matter has been referred to the "relevant authorities."
The bishop has since been released on conditional bail. The BBC has reached out to him for comment.
Diocese Response and Interim Leadership
On their website, the Diocese of Lincoln confirmed that The Bishop of Grantham, Dr Nicholas Chamberlain, will serve as the acting Diocesan Bishop during Conway's suspension. The diocese also stated that "support was in place for those affected."
"We understand that this will be a deeply unsettling time."
Background Information
Conway, who is also a member of the House of Lords, was formally installed as the Bishop of Lincoln in November 2023.
