Anthony Slaughter: A Record-Making Green Leader in Welsh Politics
Wales' Green Party leader Anthony Slaughter has become a "record maker" in multiple respects as his party secures representation in the Welsh Parliament, the Senedd, for the first time in its history.
Slaughter holds one of the two Green seats in the Senedd and has a unique background as the lead singer of Riot Squad SA, a South African punk band recognized as the first from the country to release a punk record in the United Kingdom.

An anti-apartheid activist, Slaughter relocated to the UK in the 1980s to avoid conscription into what he described as the "apartheid army." During this period, he became involved in the "anarchist squatting scene" in London.
Identifying as a punk rock republican, Slaughter believes he can serve as the "Kingmaker" in Welsh politics, particularly as Plaid Cymru aims to lead the next Welsh government with Rhun ap Iorwerth as first minister.
Policy Promises and Political Ambitions
In the election campaign, Slaughter pledged to introduce rent controls aimed at reducing living costs. His party proposes to freeze rents for one year before empowering local councils to impose caps on tenant payments.
Additional commitments include capping bus fares at £1 for most passengers, providing free travel for individuals under 22, and replacing the current council tax system.
It remains to be seen whether these policies will feature in negotiations regarding support for Plaid Cymru.
Early Life and Musical Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1962, Slaughter emigrated during childhood first to Australia and subsequently to South Africa.
He has stated that growing up under apartheid in South Africa provided him with "a real grounding in what politics is and what power is about." While residing in Cape Town, he formed the punk rock band Riot Squad SA.
The band aligned itself with the anti-apartheid movement and released the 7" vinyl EP titled "Total Onslaught." Although the record was banned by South African authorities, it was later released in the UK and Europe.
Slaughter is an admirer of The Clash, citing songs such as "Clampdown" as influences, and also appreciates reggae music, with "Two Sevens Clash" by Culture among his favorites.
Life in the UK and Political Formation
He moved to London in the early 1980s to avoid conscription into the "apartheid army." While living in Hackney, he became involved in the anarchist squatting community and noted that his political views were shaped by events such as the miners' strike and the poll tax protests.
Slaughter has indicated that the Green Party's politics resonated with his own.
Political Career in Wales
Residing in Penarth, near Cardiff, for over 15 years, Slaughter works professionally as a garden designer.
His political engagement intensified in Wales, joining the Green Party in 2010 and standing in the Cardiff South and Penarth UK parliamentary by-election in 2012, where he finished sixth.
He was elected leader of the Wales Green Party in 2018, having previously served as deputy leader in 2014 and 2015.
Slaughter has contested multiple Senedd, Westminster, and European elections, gaining recognition by finishing second in Cardiff South and Penarth during the 2024 UK general election.

Following that election result, he predicted that Green Party members would secure seats in the Senedd in 2026.
"Changes coming."
Those changes have now materialized, with the Wales Greens represented in the Senedd for the first time.
