Andy Burnham Withdraws from BBC Radio Appearance

Greater Manchester's mayor, Andy Burnham, has withdrawn from his scheduled phone-in slot on BBC Radio Manchester's Hotseat. This decision comes amid speculation that he is preparing to launch a bid to return to Westminster and challenge for the Labour Party leadership.

A spokesman for Burnham explained that the mayor needed to "prioritise discussions arising from last week's elections," which led to his withdrawal from the programme.

Labour Leadership Turmoil Following Election Losses

Sir Keir Starmer, the current Labour leader, is facing significant pressure to resign after the party suffered heavy losses in last week's elections. Four ministers have quit, and dozens of Labour MPs have publicly urged Starmer to step down.

After days of mounting pressure, Starmer warned his ministers and MPs on Wednesday that a Labour leadership contest could result in "chaos," amid speculation that Health Secretary Wes Streeting is preparing to challenge him imminently.

Local MPs Deny Stepping Aside for Burnham

Reports suggested that two local MPs might be willing to step aside to create a pathway for Burnham's return to Westminster. However, Afzal Khan, MP for Rusholme, and Geoff Smith, MP for Withington, have both denied these claims.

Both MPs have stated that the rumours concerning their potential resignation are false.

Burnham's Prioritisation of Post-Election Discussions

A spokesman for Burnham told the BBC:

"As you know, Andy doesn't like to miss the Hotseat. But this week, to get the best deal for Greater Manchester, he has to prioritise discussions arising from last week's local elections."

Angela Rayner Clears Tax Allegations and Declines Leadership Pact

Former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner, who is also considered a potential challenger to Starmer, has been cleared by HMRC of any wrongdoing regarding her tax affairs. Speaking to ITV, Rayner stated that she would not enter into any pact with Burnham to challenge the prime minister.

"I'm not doing deals or anything like that," she said.

Speculation Surrounding Wes Streeting's Leadership Challenge

Supporters of Health Secretary Wes Streeting have informed the BBC that they expect him to formally challenge Starmer for the Labour leadership as soon as today.

Burnham Cancels Additional Engagements

In addition to withdrawing from the BBC phone-in, Burnham also pulled out of a speaking engagement scheduled for the day after last week's local council elections.
