17-Year-Old Arrested After School Lockdown Over Death Threat

A 17-year-old from Pontardawe was arrested after a death threat caused a lockdown at Maesydderwen Comprehensive School. No injuries were reported, and the school remained closed the following day.

Arrest Following School Lockdown

A 17-year-old boy was arrested after a death threat made via telephone led to a lockdown at Maesydderwen Comprehensive School in Ystradgynlais, Powys.

Dyfed-Powys Police reported that officers responded to the school on Monday when pupils and staff were contained on the premises for safety.

The suspect, who is from Pontardawe, was taken into custody on suspicion of sending digital communications with threats of death or serious harm intended to cause fear, according to the police.

No injuries were reported, and the boy remains in custody.

Community Response and School Closure

Superintendent Gareth Grant expressed gratitude to parents, staff, and the community for their cooperation during the incident.

"I understand this will have had a profound impact," he said.

The school remained closed on Tuesday following the incident.

"Our neighbourhood officers will maintain a local presence for reassurance, and we will continue to work with our local secondary schools, and partners, to ensure our local community is supported."
