What has happened?
The US and Israel have initiated a military attack on Iran. US President Donald Trump has described the situation as ongoing "major combat operations" and urged Iranian government forces to surrender.
Earlier, Israel's Defence Minister announced that Israel had conducted a "pre-emptive attack" against Iran, with explosions reported across the country.
This military action follows weeks of escalating threats and diplomatic negotiations concerning Iran's nuclear programme.
Shortly after 09:30 Tehran time (06:00 GMT), Iranian media reported explosions in Tehran. Images obtained by the BBC show smoke rising over Jomhouri Square and Hassan Abad Square in the capital.
Explosions were also reported in several other Iranian cities, including Isfahan, Qom, Karaj, and Kermanshah. At this time, the number of casualties or injuries remains unknown.
Following the attacks, Iran's airspace has been closed, according to the Tasnim News Agency.
In Israel, sirens sounded nationwide at 08:15 local time (06:15 GMT), warning citizens of a potential retaliatory missile strike from Iran. Authorities have advised against public gatherings and recommended that people avoid attending school or work unless absolutely necessary. These precautions are in place until Monday at 20:00.
Israeli media report that Israel's airspace is also closed to civilian flights.
What have the US and Israel said?
President Donald Trump confirmed US involvement in a video posted on Truth Social.
"A short time ago, the United States military began major combat operations in Iran," he stated.
"Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime," he added, emphasizing that Washington's goal is to "ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon."
He also addressed the Iranian population, advising them to stay indoors and take shelter.
"When we are finished, take over your government," Trump said. "It will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations."
Earlier, Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz declared that Israel had launched a "pre-emptive attack" against Iran and announced a "special and permanent state of emergency" across Israel.
