UK Government Arranges Repatriation Flight from Oman
The UK government has chartered a repatriation flight departing from Oman to assist British nationals wishing to leave the Middle East amid ongoing regional attacks.
This flight, the first specifically organized by the UK government, is scheduled to depart Muscat International Airport on Wednesday night at 23:00 local time (19:00 GMT). Priority for seats will be given to the most vulnerable individuals.
Eligibility for the flight includes British nationals, their spouses or partners, and children under the age of 18.
The Foreign Office has stated it will contact British nationals directly to secure their place on the flight and has urged people not to travel to the airport unless they have received official confirmation.
Additionally, the Foreign Office indicated it will "continue to work with airlines to find more routes for people to return home."
Context of Regional Conflict and Travel Disruptions
Air travel throughout the Middle East has been significantly disrupted since Saturday, following strikes launched by the US and Israel on Iran, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran has conducted retaliatory attacks across the region, targeting American military bases located in neighboring Arab countries, as well as civilian and energy infrastructure.
These developments have led to the cancellation of thousands of flights, leaving many British citizens stranded in the region who wish to return home.
Several individuals have reported to the BBC a lack of clear information regarding available travel routes.
Government Response and Safety Measures
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper addressed MPs on Tuesday, emphasizing that the "safety and security" of British nationals remains a "top priority."
"Safety and security of British nationals is a top priority,"
She also confirmed that approximately 130,000 British nationals have registered with the Register Your Presence programme, which is accessible in Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Palestine, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
Currently, the Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar.
