UK Defence Secretary Prioritizes Protection Amid Iran Attacks

The UK Defence Secretary, John Healey, has emphasized that safeguarding British military bases and civilians in the Middle East from Iran's "indiscriminate attacks" remains his foremost priority.

Speaking to the BBC, Healey remarked on the recent escalation of conflict following the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the first day of US and Israeli air strikes on Iran.

"No-one will mourn" the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Healey stated.

Close Proximity of British Personnel to Retaliatory Strikes

Healey revealed that some British military personnel stationed at a base in Bahrain were located "within several hundred yards" of a retaliatory missile and drone strike that occurred on Saturday. Additionally, two missiles were launched in the direction of Cyprus.

He also noted the UK government's ongoing review of the terror threat level domestically as it evaluates potential Iranian retaliatory actions.

It is important to note that the UK did not participate in the US-Israeli strikes on Iran.

Commitment to Regional Security and Preventing Escalation

During an interview on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Healey outlined his primary responsibilities as Defence Secretary.

"My first job as defence secretary is to protect those British people - civilians and military - our British bases, reinforce regional security and do all we can to prevent further regional escalation."

He acknowledged public concern regarding the targets of recent attacks, which extended beyond military sites to include hotels in Dubai and Bahrain, as well as Kuwait's civilian airport.

"I know people at home will be worried that not just military targets were hit yesterday but we've also seen hotels in Dubai and Bahrain, Kuwait's civilian airport.

"But in that Bahrain military base that was hit by missiles and drones yesterday, we had 300 British personnel, some within several hundred yards of the strike."

Missile Launches Toward Cyprus and Regional Risks

Healey provided further details on missile activity in the region.

"Two ballistic missiles were fired in the direction of Cyprus," he said, adding, "Now, we're pretty sure they weren't targeted at Cyprus.

"But nevertheless it demonstrates how our bases, our personnel - military and civilians - at the moment are at risk with a regime that is increasingly indiscriminate, widespread and uncontrolled in the attacks it is mounting."

Enhanced Defence Measures in the Middle East

Healey highlighted that the UK had strengthened its regional defences several weeks prior to the recent attacks. These measures included the deployment of additional radars, aircraft, and weapons systems.

"We're flying British planes in the air throughout yesterday and overnight.

"That's defending our regional allies, it's reinforcing that sense of security and it's trying to protect, first and foremost, our British bases and our British personnel."
