Escalating Tensions Between US and Iran
US President Donald Trump and senior Iranian officials have exchanged new threats of further action after both sides carried out military strikes against each other.
President Trump stated that Tehran had taken "too long to negotiate a deal" and would now "have to pay the price," though he did not specify the nature of the consequences. He further claimed that Iran had been "completely defeated" and was "all talk and no action."
This development followed a warning from Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who earlier declared that his country would "leave no attack or threat unanswered," asserting that the US had suffered "defeats on the battlefield."
Sequence of Military Actions
The US conducted strikes on Iranian sites on Tuesday in retaliation for the downing of a US army helicopter in the Gulf. Subsequently, Iran launched attacks on US bases in the region.
The US military's Central Command (Centcom) reported that Iranian defense systems, ground control stations, and radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz were targeted.
According to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), it struck 21 targets at US bases in the region, including locations in Bahrain and Jordan. Additionally, Kuwait's army reported intercepting an attack.
Trump's Statements on Social Media
On Wednesday, President Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social:
"Iran's Military is a complete and total mess. Much of it, like their Navy and Air Force, doesn't even exist anymore - They have been completely defeated."
"They've taken too long to negotiate a deal that would have been great for them, now they will have to pay the price!!!"
These remarks contrasted with his comments on Tuesday when he told journalists that the US and Iran were "in the final throes of what will be a very, very good deal."
Iran's Response and Diplomatic Concerns
Also on Wednesday, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqai accused the US of "damaging this diplomatic process through the contradictory messages it sends, its repeated shifts in positions and demands, and, worst of all, through repeated violations of the ceasefire."
Baqai emphasized that Iran needed to reassess the situation and noted that any diplomatic process required a minimum level of stability.
Details on Military Engagements
On Tuesday, Centcom described its strikes on Iran as "a proportional response" to the Apache helicopter downing on Monday, while the IRGC characterized the US strikes as "vicious."
President Trump previously stated on Truth Social that the helicopter had been "shot down" while patrolling the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping channel that has been effectively closed since the conflict began in late February.
Fox News quoted Trump on Wednesday saying that an Iranian drone had hit the helicopter without exploding as it flew "very low."
The two crew members survived and were rescued by an American sea drone.
US officials indicated that Iran used a drone to attack the helicopter. However, it remains unclear whether the drone deliberately targeted the aircraft, according to an unnamed US official who spoke to CBS News, the BBC's US partner.
The semi-official Iranian Mehr News Agency reported that Iran had not claimed responsibility for the downed aircraft.
Damage and Interceptions
The IRGC stated that the recent US strikes targeted the cities of Jask and Sirik, as well as Qeshm island, damaging a telecommunications tower and two water tanks.
cited a US official on Wednesday who said that nearly all Iranian missiles and drones launched at US bases in the Middle East in response were intercepted, with no reported casualties.
