RAF Typhoon Jets Operating Over Bahrain
RAF Typhoon jets have been actively deployed over Bahrain as part of the United Kingdom's defensive operations in the Middle East, according to information received by the BBC.
Out of the four jets sent to Qatar, two have been specifically assigned to assist Bahrain in intercepting incoming drones amid the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran, which has now entered its second week.
Diplomatic and Security Developments
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper arrived in Saudi Arabia on Thursday amid persistent concerns regarding Iranian threats to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for commercial shipping.
Bahraini officials reported that since the onset of the conflict, their air defenses have intercepted a total of 190 incoming drones and 114 missiles, primarily through their own capabilities.
Despite these efforts, officials emphasized an urgent need for Short Range Air Defence systems to effectively counter drone threats.
Earlier this week, Bahrain's airport fuel storage tanks suffered significant damage due to an Iranian drone attack.
Bahrain has recorded the highest number of casualties among Gulf nations from a single strike since the conflict began, with 23 civilians injured—including four children—on 9 March.
UK Military Involvement and Regional Patrols
Defence Secretary John Healey stated on Thursday that UK pilots have accumulated over 300 flying hours within the past 13 days.
"The UK had clocked up more than 300 pilot flying hours over the previous 13 days."
Brigadier Guy Foden, a senior British Army officer, added that the UK has conducted air combat patrols over Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, alongside multiple sorties over Qatar.
"The UK had flown air combat patrols over Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, in addition to a 'number of sorties' over Qatar."
Defence of Cyprus and Naval Deployment
RAF jets, in coordination with European allies, have continued defensive operations over Cyprus following an Iranian-made drone strike on the runway at RAF Akrotiri base on 1 March.
Additionally, the British warship HMS Dragon departed the United Kingdom for the eastern Mediterranean on Tuesday, with its primary mission being the protection of the RAF Akrotiri base.
