International Condemnation of Israeli West Bank Measures
Israeli initiatives to expand control over the West Bank have sparked widespread international criticism, including a reaffirmation from Washington of the Trump administration's opposition to annexation of the occupied territory.
These measures, announced by Israel's defence minister, Israel Katz, involve extending Israeli authority in areas currently administered by Palestinians. Katz emphasized that the steps aim to reinforce Israeli settlements in the West Bank and prevent the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The new regulations also facilitate the identification of land ownership in the West Bank and enable non-Arabs to purchase property within the territory. Although the implementation date of these rules remains unspecified, they do not require additional approval.
"We will continue to kill the idea of a Palestinian state," Katz stated in a joint announcement with finance minister Bezalel Smotrich.
European Union and Arab States Respond
The European Union described the measures as "another step in the wrong direction," warning that sanctions remain a possibility, including the potential suspension of components of the EU-Israel trade agreement.
A collective statement from several Arab and Islamic nations—key to former President Donald Trump's regional plans—strongly condemned the Israeli decisions. The statement declared these actions as illegal attempts to impose Israeli sovereignty unlawfully.
Signatories to the statement include Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Turkey. They warned that the new measures would "inflame violence, deepen the conflict and endanger regional stability and security."
United Kingdom's Position
The United Kingdom expressed strong condemnation of the Israeli initiatives. A UK statement declared,
"Any unilateral attempt to alter the geographic or demographic makeup of Palestine is wholly unacceptable and would be inconsistent with international law. We call on Israel to reverse these decisions immediately."
Context and Timing
The international backlash emerged just before a scheduled White House meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then-President Donald Trump on Wednesday. While the administration did not issue a formal comment, a White House official conveyed opposition to the measures.
"President Trump has clearly stated that he does not support Israel annexing the West Bank," the official said. "A stable West Bank keeps Israel secure and is in line with this administration’s goal to achieve peace in the region."
Details of the Israeli Measures
The measures are comprehensive and directly affect governance and territorial control in the West Bank. They repeal a law from the Jordanian administration era prior to 1967, which prohibited land sales to non-Arabs.
Additionally, authority over building permits in Hebron is transferred from the Palestinian municipality to the Israeli civil administration, the military occupation authority in the area. This transfer may contravene the 1997 Hebron protocol, which divided the city into two sectors.
Furthermore, the Jewish settlement surrounding Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem is shifted from Palestinian to direct Israeli control.
Palestinian Authority's Response
The Palestinian Authority, whose governance in designated West Bank areas has been undermined by financial constraints, Israeli obstruction, settlement expansion, and internal corruption, issued a statement from Ramallah. It warned that the Israeli measures aim to "deepen attempts to annex the occupied West Bank."
