Family Seeks Accountability for Death of Palestinian-American Man

The family of Nasrallah Abu Siyam, a 19-year-old Palestinian-American man, has called for accountability following his fatal shooting by an Israeli settler in the occupied West Bank.

Abu Siyam was shot near Ramallah on Wednesday, marking at least the sixth American citizen killed by Israeli settlers or soldiers in the West Bank over the past two years.

The Trump administration expressed readiness to provide consular assistance but did not address criticisms that its policies failed to curb the rise in settler violence.

The Israeli embassy in Washington stated that the incident is under review and emphasized that an "operational inquiry... must be completed as soon as possible."

Incident Details and Family Statements

Nasrallah Abu Siyam was a US citizen born in Philadelphia. According to his family, he was among about 30 residents of the village of Mukhmas attempting to prevent armed settlers from stealing their goats on Wednesday.

During the confrontation, both residents and settlers threw stones. A witness reported that settlers fired shots at least three times, fatally wounding Abu Siyam.

"A young man of 19 shot and killed in this cold blood and no responsibility, impunity completely," said Abdulhamid Siyam, Abu Siyam's cousin, describing the death as a "big loss" and criticizing the lack of consequences for settler actions in the West Bank.

Political Context and Official Responses

The Trump administration has faced criticism from human rights organizations for lifting Biden-era sanctions on violent settlers, who have seldom been held criminally accountable by Israeli authorities.

The US State Department confirmed awareness of the death of a US citizen and stated it is "carefully monitoring the situation."

An Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson reported that soldiers responded to the scene and employed "riot dispersal means to restore order."

The IDF statement clarified, "No IDF fire was reported during the course of the incident." The spokesperson also confirmed that the incident is under review and noted that "a continuous military presence" will be maintained in the area in the coming days to prevent further incidents.
