Couple Stranded in Dubai Amid Regional Missile Strikes
A couple currently stranded in Dubai due to escalating missile attacks in the Middle East are anxiously awaiting news on when they can return home.
Multiple countries in the region have experienced retaliatory missile strikes following US and Israeli airstrikes that resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Stuart Wilson, a resident of Guernsey, described the situation as "an anxious waiting game" for himself and his wife Wendy.
The couple hope to board a flight back to the UK, scheduled to arrive at Gatwick Airport in London on Tuesday morning; however, they acknowledge that the flight "could be cancelled at any moment."
As of Sunday afternoon, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) defence ministry reported it had intercepted 165 incoming ballistic missiles, two cruise missiles, and 541 Iranian drones.
Wilson shared details about their current circumstances, stating,
"We're just a bit out of the main busy part of Dubai, there's a lot of people here, the hotel have been brilliant, and they're supporting us in every way they can, really."
He confirmed that they are registered with the British Embassy in Dubai, which has been providing them with information and assistance.
Currently, the couple are not permitted to leave their hotel. However, the hotel is connected to a large shopping mall, offering some access to amenities.
"We can't go outside, they've closed all the communal areas, the patios, the swimming pool, you know, we're not allowed to go out there at all, it makes a lot of sense."
Wilson also reported hearing explosions on Monday morning but reassured that they are safe where they are staying.
"We're ok where we are, we're quite safe at the minute, but it's just a bit scary when you get these things going off."
