El Mencho Killed in Military Operation
Mexico's most wanted individual and leader of the notorious Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) drug cartel, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," was reportedly killed by the army during a security operation. The operation took place at dawn on Sunday in the central-western state of Jalisco, according to local media reports.
Mexico's defence ministry confirmed that El Mencho died from injuries sustained while being airlifted following the military operation, as reported by the news agency.
CJNG's Expansion and Aftermath
The CJNG cartel, originally based in Jalisco, has expanded its influence to have an almost nationwide presence across Mexico. On Sunday, there were unconfirmed reports of vehicles being set on fire and sightings of armed men on the streets in Jalisco and other regions.
US Involvement and Warnings
The United States had previously offered a $15 million (approximately £11.1 million) reward for information leading to the capture of El Mencho. In response to ongoing security concerns, the US State Department issued a shelter-in-place warning for US citizens in several Mexican states, including Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacan, Guerrero, and Nuevo Leon.
