Incident Overview
Four individuals who entered Cuban territorial waters aboard a US-registered speedboat were fatally shot by Cuban border guards, according to an official statement from Cuba's government.
The Cuban interior ministry reported that passengers on the speedboat fired upon a coast guard vessel that approached them.
Additionally, six other passengers sustained injuries during the confrontation near an island off Cuba's northern coast.
The identities of those aboard the vessel and the purpose of their presence in the area remain unclear. The Cuban government has announced an investigation to "clarify" the circumstances surrounding the event.
Details from Cuban Authorities
In a statement posted on X, the ministry specified that the Florida-registered speedboat, bearing registration number FL7726SH, was detected near Cayo Falcones, located in Villa Clara province, on Wednesday morning.
When a Cuban boat carrying five members of the ministry's border guard approached the speedboat to conduct identification procedures, the crew of the vessel "opened fire," wounding the Cuban commander, the statement detailed.
"As a consequence of the confrontation, as of the time of this report, four aggressors on the foreign vessel were killed and six injured."
The injured individuals were evacuated and provided with medical treatment.
Reactions and Calls for Investigation
The BBC has reached out to the US State Department and the White House for comments regarding the incident.
Florida Representative Carlos Gimenez, a Cuban-American and former mayor of Miami, expressed his concerns on X, demanding an "urgent" investigation into what he described as a "massacre." He emphasized that US authorities "must determine whether any of the victims were US citizens or legal residents."
"The Cuban government must be relegated to the dust bin of history," Gimenez added in a separate post.
Context and Regional Tensions
This event occurs amid heightened tensions between the United States and Cuba. Cuba is currently experiencing a worsening fuel crisis, exacerbated by US sanctions that block oil shipments from Venezuela, a longstanding regional ally, to the island.
The Cuban statement referenced these tensions, affirming that "in the face of current challenges, Cuba reaffirms its determination to protect its territorial waters" and to safeguard its sovereignty.
The incident also coincides with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to Saint Kitts and Nevis, where he is meeting with Caribbean leaders. This visit is part of the Trump administration's efforts to increase pressure on the Cuban government and address other regional matters.
