Heavy Rains Cause Fatal Floods and Landslides in Minas Gerais
At least 20 people have lost their lives in the south-eastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais following heavy rains on Monday evening that triggered floods and multiple landslides.
The majority of fatalities occurred in the city of Juiz de Fora, where officials reported 15 deaths. An additional six deaths were confirmed in the city of Ubá.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with emergency workers and local residents searching for dozens of individuals reported missing after several homes and buildings collapsed overnight due to the severe weather conditions.
Government Response and Official Statements
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his sympathies to the families affected by the disaster and those who have been displaced from their homes. The government has declared a "state of calamity" in Juiz de Fora to facilitate emergency response and recovery.
"I send my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and those who lost their homes," President Lula stated.
In a post on the social media platform X, Lula announced that he had mobilised the federal government to provide assistance to the affected region. He emphasized that the government's priority is humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts.
"I have mobilised the wider government to support those in the region. Our focus is on providing humanitarian assistance and supporting reconstruction efforts," he wrote.
"The government will act with the speed and force this moment requires," he added.
Impact on Local Population and Aid Efforts
In Juiz de Fora alone, approximately 440 people have been rendered homeless or displaced by the floods and landslides. The local government is offering temporary shelter to those affected and has called for donations of essential items such as water, food, clothing, and hygiene supplies.
Mayor Margarida Salomão described the event as the "saddest" moment during her five years in office and declared three days of official mourning to honour the victims in Juiz de Fora.
"This is the saddest moment in my five years in local government," Mayor Salomão said.
She confirmed that children were among the deceased but noted that no further official information regarding the identities of the victims has been released at this time.
State Officials Comment on the Disaster
Governor Romeu Zema of Minas Gerais characterized the day as a "sad day" for the state and extended his condolences to the families impacted by the intense rainfall.
"The state is experiencing a sad day," Governor Zema said, offering solidarity to those affected.
Local authorities reported that February has been the rainiest month in the history of Juiz de Fora, with rainfall totals already exceeding twice the expected amount for the entire month.
Weather Alerts and Seasonal Context
On Tuesday, Brazil's national meteorological institute issued a heavy rain alert covering all of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and 12 additional states across the country.
Currently, Brazil is in its summer season, which coincides with the peak rainy period. Thunderstorms, flooding, and landslides are common occurrences during this time of year.
Previous Rain-Related Disasters in Brazil
Earlier in 2024, heavy rains in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul caused widespread flooding, submerging hundreds of towns. That event resulted in at least 85 fatalities and displaced approximately 150,000 people.
