British Man Arrested Following Discovery of Woman's Body in Colombia
Matthew Ashley Foster-Smith was arrested at Quito International Airport in Ecuador after the body of a woman was found inside a suitcase in Colombia.
Foster-Smith, 46, from Bournemouth, Dorset, is alleged to have caused the death of 36-year-old Natalia Villalba in an apartment in Bogota on 18 June, according to local authorities.
The Attorney General's Office in Colombia stated that Foster-Smith is suspected of beating Villalba to death before placing her body in a suitcase in an attempt to conceal the incident and fleeing the scene.
An arrest warrant was issued by prosecutors in Colombia, and an Interpol Red Notice was subsequently released, authorities confirmed.
Foster-Smith was detained at Quito International Airport in Ecuador.
Bogota's mayor, Carlos Fernando Galan, noted that Dorset Police had assisted in the operation to locate Foster-Smith.
"We are supporting a British man who has been detained in Ecuador and are in touch with the local authorities," said a spokesperson from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
Previous Convictions and Restrictions
Foster-Smith was previously sentenced to two years and two months in prison for stalking offences committed in 2023.
Upon his release, he faced indefinite restrictions after Dorset Police secured enhanced powers to protect his victim.
As part of a stalking prevention order issued in January by Poole Magistrates' Court, Foster-Smith was required to maintain regular contact with police, informing them of his address and vehicle details, and was prohibited from contacting his victims.
Additionally, restrictions were placed on his use of electronic communication devices.
Dorset Police has been contacted for comment.
